50 Years Of The Emergency: Honoring The Struggle For Democracy

In remembrance of one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic journey, Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), District Greater Noida, Meerut Province, organized a powerful event on the theme “The Emergency: A Saga of Struggle” at Gautam Buddha University, Greater Noida. The occasion marked 50 years since the imposition of the Emergency in 1975, a time that tested the spirit of Indian democracy and left an indelible mark on the nation’s collective conscience.

The event brought together a wide range of participants, including students, professors, retired defence personnel, social activists, and political thinkers. It was a moment of deep reflection and learning—particularly for the youth who have only read about the Emergency in history books but have not experienced its harsh realities.

A Gathering of Patriotic Spirits

The program was graced by several respected figures:

Hon’ble Shri Chand Sharma Ji, Member of Legislative Council (Teachers Constituency),

Shri Gaurav Gaur Ji, Prant Sangathan Mantri, ABVP Meerut Province,

Other senior members of ABVP and local dignitaries who have played important roles in shaping student activism and democratic awareness.

One of the most impactful aspects of the event was the presence of many retired defence personnel, individuals who had either witnessed or served during the time of the Emergency. Their insights, shared through personal anecdotes, offered a vivid picture of the atmosphere of fear and resistance that defined those 21 months between 1975 and 1977.

Their stories echoed a common sentiment—the spirit of the Indian people could not be silenced, even under the most extreme conditions. The testimonies served as a reminder that freedom is never free—it is earned, fought for, and must be preserved with vigilance.

The Importance of Remembering
The Emergency, declared on 25th June 1975, saw the suspension of civil liberties, imprisonment of opposition leaders, and suppression of media. It was a period when the Constitution was bent, and voices of dissent were brutally silenced. The event held by ABVP not only remembered these injustices but also celebrated the courage of those who stood up, spoke out, and ultimately led the country back to the path of democracy.

Keynote speakers discussed how student movements, underground literature, and citizen protests helped build a silent but powerful resistance. ABVP, as one of the prominent student organizations during that time, played a significant role in mobilizing the youth and raising awareness, often at great personal risk.

Educating and Empowering the Youth
For the younger generation in the audience, this event was an eye-opener. It connected them with a historical legacy of resistance and reminded them of the fragility of democratic values when complacency sets in. The message was clear—"Never take your freedom for granted."

The program emphasized that students and young professionals must be active participants in the democratic process, staying informed, engaged, and ready to raise their voice when needed. Democracy thrives not only through elections but through constant awareness and accountability.

A Resounding Success
The event was not just a ceremonial observance but a meaningful conversation on the present and future of Indian democracy. From discussions to cultural performances and powerful speeches, the program struck an emotional chord with all who attended.

Credit goes to ABVP Greater Noida, Meerut Prant, and all its volunteers for organizing such a thoughtful and impactful event. Their dedication to educating youth about India’s political history is a testament to their commitment to nation-building through student empowerment.

As India continues to grow and evolve, events like these play a crucial role in reminding us of where we came from, what we stood for, and what we must continue to protect—our democracy, our Constitution, and our freedom.
